What to Expect at a Newborn Photoshoot: Australian Photographers Explain

what to expect at a newborn photoshoot
Australian Newborn Photography Guide

If you've never had a newborn photoshoot before, you might be wondering what actually happens once you arrive. How long will it take? Does your baby need to sleep? What if they need feeding? And will parents and siblings be in the photos too?

Advice From Australian Photographers

To answer those questions, we reviewed interviews published by BabyInfo with newborn photographers from around Australia, looking closely at what photographers say parents can expect during a newborn photography session.

One thing becomes clear very quickly: there isn't one standard newborn photoshoot. Session length, styling and photography approach vary, but many photographers describe an experience designed to work around the baby rather than expecting the baby to work around the photoshoot.

1 Allow Time Newborn sessions can be longer than ordinary portraits
2 Expect Breaks Feeds, cuddles and nappy changes are normal
3 Follow Baby Your newborn doesn't need to perform on cue
4 Relax Your photographer will usually guide you through the session

First: Don't Expect Every Newborn Photoshoot to Be the Same

Australian photographers interviewed by BabyInfo describe quite different newborn photography experiences.

Some photographers work from dedicated studios using wraps, outfits, props and carefully styled setups. Others photograph families in their own homes and focus on natural interaction and everyday moments. Some create gently posed newborn portraits, while others favour a more lifestyle or baby-led approach.

Session length varies too. In the interviews we reviewed, photographers describe newborn sessions ranging from around an hour through to approximately three hours, with some deliberately leaving the session untimed.

So rather than arriving with a fixed idea of what a newborn photoshoot should look like, it's worth understanding the approach of the photographer you've booked.

How Long Does a Newborn Photoshoot Take?

A newborn session will often take longer than a standard family portrait session because babies need time to feed, settle, cuddle and be changed.

But there isn't one universal session length.

For example, Susan Bradfield says her newborn sessions take around three hours, allowing time for feeding, changing and settling. Kelly Jordan describes sessions as typically taking around one to two hours, sometimes longer when a baby needs extra feeding or cuddles or is a light sleeper.

Other BabyInfo interviewees describe everything from approximately 60–90 minute sessions through to untimed sessions whose length depends on the baby's needs.

What this means for parents: don't make important plans immediately after your photoshoot. Even if your photographer gives you an approximate duration, newborns can make their own timetable.

Feeding, Cuddling and Nappy Changes Are Part of the Session

One of the clearest themes in the interviews is that a newborn photoshoot doesn't need to run continuously from beginning to end.

If your baby becomes hungry, needs changing or simply wants to be held, the session can pause.

Susan Bradfield specifically builds feeding, changing and settling time into her approximately three-hour newborn sessions. Little Manly Photography similarly describes its roughly 1.5-hour sessions as including time for baby to feed, be changed, become unsettled and settle again.

The Fitzroys takes the same principle further: if baby needs to be fed, changed, cuddled or simply given a moment, the photography stops and waits.

For new parents worried that a feed or crying spell will somehow “ruin” the photoshoot, this is an important point: these interruptions are a normal part of photographing newborns.

Your Baby Does Not Have to “Behave” for the Camera

This may be the most reassuring thing for first-time parents to know.

Newborn photographers work with babies for a living. A newborn who won't sleep, wants another feed or doesn't settle into a particular pose isn't necessarily an unusual session.

Several BabyInfo interviewees describe working at the baby's pace. Kelly Jordan says newborn sessions are taken at the baby's pace, while Together Nest Photography describes allowing the baby to lead the workflow.

The Fitzroys similarly tells parents not to arrive expecting a perfectly sleeping baby or perfectly behaved toddler. Babies are unpredictable, and the session works with what they give on the day.

Remember: the aim isn't to make your newborn cooperate with a photography schedule. An experienced newborn photographer should be prepared to adapt the session to your baby's needs and comfort.

Will Your Baby Need to Be Asleep?

Not necessarily.

Sleepy newborns can make some curled-up and carefully posed photographs easier to create, particularly with very young babies. But being awake doesn't mean the session has failed.

Some photographers specialise in posed newborn imagery, while others take a more natural or lifestyle approach where eye contact, movement and interaction can become part of the finished gallery.

The important thing is to choose a photographer whose style matches the kinds of photographs you would like to receive.

Will Parents and Siblings Be Photographed?

Often, yes — but this depends on the package and photographer you book.

A number of photographers interviewed by BabyInfo describe including parents and siblings during newborn sessions.

Susan Bradfield says she generally begins with family and sibling photographs, allowing children to leave afterward with another adult while she concentrates on the newborn. Together Nest similarly starts with approximately 30–45 minutes of family and sibling photography before focusing on baby.

Morgan Ellem also describes starting with sibling and family photographs before moving predominantly to the newborn, while still incorporating family members throughout the session.

If family photographs are particularly important to you, confirm they're included in your chosen package before booking.

What Actually Happens During the Photoshoot?

Every photographer works differently, but a studio newborn session may look something like this:

1

Arrive and settle in

Your photographer may talk through the planned photographs, colours, setups or styling before starting.

2

Family and sibling photographs

Some photographers do these first, particularly when young siblings are involved, so children don't have to wait through the entire newborn session.

3

Newborn portraits

Depending on the photographer's style, baby may be wrapped, dressed, gently posed or photographed naturally with parents.

4

Feed, change and cuddle as required

The session can stop whenever baby needs something. These breaks aren't necessarily lost photography time — they're simply part of working with a newborn.

5

Different setups or combinations

Your photographer may move between different wraps, backdrops, family combinations or poses depending on your package and baby's comfort.

6

Gallery and image selection

What happens next varies considerably. Some photographers send an online gallery later, while others arrange a separate viewing or selection process.

This isn't a universal schedule. In-home and lifestyle photographers may work very differently, and even studio photographers have their own workflow.

Studio vs In-Home Newborn Sessions

Studio Session

More controlled & styled

A studio may provide wraps, outfits, props, backdrops and a deliberately warm environment. The photographer has greater control over lighting and styling, and sessions may include several planned setups.

In-Home Session

Relaxed & familiar

Lifestyle sessions can take place in your own home and may focus more heavily on interaction between baby and family. Feeding, changing and settling can happen in your usual environment.

Neither approach is inherently better. They create different experiences and different styles of photographs.

What About Props, Wraps and Outfits?

Again, this varies by photographer.

Some studios have extensive collections of newborn wraps, bonnets, outfits, headbands, blankets and props. Others deliberately keep styling minimal. Lifestyle photographers may instead incorporate your own home, clothing, blankets or sentimental family items.

Together Nest, for example, asks clients to choose favourite newborn setups before the session. Morgan Ellem describes a much more minimalist studio approach using a white backdrop and white wrap.

This is another reason to look carefully through a photographer's portfolio before booking: their gallery usually gives you a good indication of how styled or natural your own photographs are likely to feel.

What Happens If Your Baby Cries?

They get comforted.

It's easy for parents to worry that they're somehow wasting the photographer's time when their baby becomes unsettled. But the BabyInfo interviews repeatedly describe sessions with time for feeding, cuddling, changing and settling.

Little Manly Photography explicitly builds unsettled-and-settled-again time into the session. Foxbelle Photography allows one to two hours for cuddles, feeds and nappy changes. Bree Hulme describes a baby-led approach where each newborn's comfort determines how posing and styling progress.

So an unsettled period doesn't mean the photoshoot is going badly.

The important takeaway
Your newborn doesn't need to perform. The photoshoot should adapt to your baby.
A recurring principle across the Australian photographer interviews reviewed for this guide.

How Much Direction Will the Photographer Give You?

If you're worried about not knowing where to stand, how to hold your baby or what to do with your hands, you shouldn't need to arrive knowing how to pose.

Photographers use different levels of direction, but several of the interviews describe guiding families through the process.

The Fitzroys, for example, describes gently guiding parents when creating a particular portrait while also watching for natural interactions. Tiffany's Photography similarly says clients receive plenty of prompts and guidance to help create genuine connections.

The result may look effortless, but that doesn't necessarily mean you were expected to figure it all out yourself.

Newborn Safety Should Come Before the Photograph

Newborn photography can involve handling very young babies, so safety is an important part of the experience.

Photographers interviewed by BabyInfo describe measures including specialist newborn posing and handling training, first-aid training, vaccinations, sanitising studios and props, supporting babies during poses and avoiding positions that make a baby uncomfortable.

A photographer should also be willing to stop or change what they're doing when a baby isn't comfortable.

If you're still choosing your photographer, don't be afraid to ask about their newborn experience, approach to posing and safety practices.

What Happens After the Photoshoot?

Finishing the session doesn't necessarily mean you'll receive your photographs immediately.

The photographer generally needs to select and edit the images first. Depending on their business model, you may then receive a proof gallery, choose your favourite photographs, attend a viewing appointment or receive a completed digital gallery.

Turnaround times also vary. Some photographers provide previews quickly while full galleries may take one or several weeks. Printed albums and wall art can take longer again.

Ask your photographer about this before booking if you need photographs by a particular date.

So, What Should You Expect on the Day?

Perhaps the most useful expectation is to expect some unpredictability.

Your baby might sleep beautifully. They might stay wide awake. They might need two feeds, three nappy changes and a long cuddle. Your toddler might enthusiastically join every family photograph — or decide they've had enough after ten minutes.

None of those things automatically means the session has gone wrong.

The photographers we reviewed describe making space for exactly these kinds of moments. Newborn photography is generally less about following a rigid schedule and more about creating photographs around the baby and family who arrive on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Newborn Photoshoot FAQs

Quick answers to some of the questions parents commonly have before their first newborn photography session.

How long does a newborn photoshoot take?

It varies by photographer and style. In the Australian photographer interviews reviewed for this guide, examples range from approximately 60–90 minutes to around three hours, while some photographers offer untimed sessions. Longer sessions allow time for feeding, changing, cuddling and settling.

What happens if my baby cries during the photoshoot?

Your photographer can pause while baby is fed, changed, cuddled or settled. Newborn photographers are accustomed to babies needing breaks, so crying or feeding does not automatically mean the session is going badly.

Does my newborn need to sleep for the photos?

No. Sleep can make some traditional newborn poses easier, but awake photographs can also be beautiful. Your photographer's style will influence how they work with sleepy and alert babies.

Are parents included in newborn photos?

Many photographers offer parent and family photographs during newborn sessions, but inclusions vary between photographers and packages. Confirm this before booking if family photographs are important to you.

Can siblings be included in newborn photos?

Often, yes. Some photographers specifically begin with sibling and family photographs so younger children can finish their part of the session early. Check whether sibling photographs are included in your selected package.

Do I need to bring newborn outfits and props?

It depends on the photographer. Some studios provide wraps, outfits, bonnets, headbands, blankets and props, while lifestyle photographers may use your own clothing and home environment. Your photographer should explain what to bring before the session.

How soon will I receive my newborn photos?

Turnaround varies. Some photographers provide previews or proof galleries within days, while fully edited galleries may take one or several weeks. Albums, prints and wall art can require additional production time.
